As a couple based in Rovaniemi, Finland \u2014 where our idea of a crowded beach is three other people on a lake \u2014 the prospect of Portugal\u2019s most popular coast in peak season sounded like a stress test rather than a holiday. It was, a little. But the Algarve in summer also delivered some of the most strikingly beautiful coastline we\u2019ve seen in all 21 countries we\u2019ve visited.<\/p>\n<p>The trick, as with any heavily visited destination, is knowing what to skip and where to position yourself. The region has roughly 450,000 residents but receives nearly 4 million international overnight stays in the summer quarter alone.
