Warm light, hills that exhaust you and reward you in equal measure, and a city that seems genuinely unbothered by how beautiful it is. On three days you cannot do everything. The two decisions that shape the entire trip are <strong>where you stay<\/strong> and <strong>how you pace the hills<\/strong>. Get both right and three days feels generous. Get them wrong and you\u2019ll spend half your energy on logistical backtracking.<\/p>\n<h3>Where to base yourself<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chiado:<\/strong> the sweet spot for most visitors \u2014 flat enough to walk from, close to trams and the metro, full of good caf\u00e9s. A little pricier but worth it for a short trip.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pr\u00edncipe Real:<\/strong> quieter, more residential, slightly uphill from everything. Great boutiques and the best garden-caf\u00e9 in the city (Jardim das Cerejeiras). Budget 45\u201360 minutes, not the full morning \u2014 the castle itself is more impressive from the outside than the inside.<\/p>\n<p>From the castle, walk downhill into <strong>Alfama<\/strong>. Resist the temptation to follow a map. This is one of the few neighbourhoods in Europe where getting slightly lost is genuinely the best strategy. The neighbourhood was one of the few areas of Lisbon to survive the 1755 earthquake, and it shows \u2014 the street plan is medieval, the azulejo tile work is everywhere, and the laundry still hangs between windows at 10 am.<\/p>\n<h3>Afternoon: Miradouro da Gra\u00e7a and the fado quarter<\/h3>\n<p>Resist the most-photographed miradouro (Portas do Sol) unless you\u2019re there very early. Instead, take the 37 bus to <strong>Miradouro da Gra\u00e7a<\/strong> \u2014 quieter, locals outnumber tourists, and the view is arguably better. Sit for twenty minutes. This is the kind of moment Lisbon gives you for free if you avoid the Instagram trail.<\/p>\n<p>Late afternoon, look for a small casa de fados near the Largo do Chafariz. The cheapest authentic fado is at lunch \u2014 a few restaurants in Alfama do a set menu with live music for \u20ac15\u201320.
