The reconstruction is so faithful that you genuinely forget it\u2019s postwar. Long Market (D\u0142ugi Targ) is the centrepiece: a 300-metre pedestrian boulevard flanked by tall, narrow, colour-coded merchant houses, with Neptune\u2019s Fountain at one end and the Green Gate at the other. Walking it on a summer evening, when the amber light catches the facades, is one of those travel moments that stays with you.<\/p>\n<h3>Sopot \u2014 the beach is better than you think<\/h3>\n<p>Sopot is a separate municipality but it\u2019s essentially Gda\u0144sk\u2019s beach neighbourhood, 15 minutes by commuter rail (SKM). It has Poland\u2019s longest wooden pier, a genuine sandy beach that fills up on hot summer days, and a resort-town atmosphere that feels more like the French Riviera than you\u2019d expect from the Baltic. The water is cold by Mediterranean standards but warm enough in July to swim. The seafront promenade, the pier, and the evening atmosphere in the pedestrianised upper town are all worth the short trip.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s2\">How to spend 2\u20133 days in Gda\u0144sk<\/h2>\n<p>Two days is the minimum to feel like you\u2019ve actually seen the city. Three days gives you space to slow down, catch a day trip to Sopot or Malbork Castle, and not feel like you\u2019re rushing.<\/p>\n<h3>Day 1 \u2014 The Main City on foot<\/h3>\n<p>Start at Long Market in the morning before the tour groups arrive. Walk the Royal Road from the Golden Gate through Long Street to Long Market and down to the Crane (\u017buraw) on the Mot\u0142awa waterfront. This is one of the best-designed history museums we\u2019ve walked through anywhere. It shares a site with the old Lenin Shipyard, where the Solidarity strikes began in 1980. Book tickets in advance in summer. Afternoon: hop the SKM to Sopot, walk the pier, swim if the weather holds, have a late lunch or early dinner in the town, and return to Gda\u0144sk in the evening.<\/p>\n<h3>Day 3 (optional) \u2014 Malbork Castle day trip<\/h3>\n<p>Malbork Castle is 45 minutes by train from Gda\u0144sk and is the largest castle in the world by land area (a UNESCO site).
