A pace that lets you look up instead of staring at your phone for directions. We spent four hours here expecting to be slightly bored and stayed until the last evening train.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t miss:<\/strong> the Saturday market on the Grote Markt, the Frans Hals Museum (smaller than the Rijksmuseum, far less crowded), and a walk south to the Haarlemmerhout park if the weather is good.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eat:<\/strong> raw herring from a street stall near the Waag building. It\u2019s a Dutch national ritual and Haarlem does it better than Amsterdam\u2019s tourist versions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transit:<\/strong> direct Sprinter every 7\u201310 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal. No reservation needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Delft: blue tiles, Vermeer, and manageable crowds<\/h3>\n<p>Delft is the city that ended up on most of our photos. The canals are narrower and prettier than Amsterdam\u2019s, the historic centre is genuinely intact in a way few Dutch cities are (it avoided major wartime bombing), and the connection to Vermeer and to Delft Blue pottery is a legitimate cultural hook, not just marketing. The Royal Delft factory tour is one of the better museum experiences we\u2019ve done in the Netherlands \u2014 it\u2019s hands-on, un-rushed, and worth the \u20ac22 entry.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t miss:<\/strong> the Nieuwe Kerk (where all Dutch royals are buried \u2014 access the tower for panoramic views), the Markt on a weekday morning before bus tours arrive, and at least one canal walk in the late afternoon golden hour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eat:<\/strong> pancakes at a traditional pancake house (\u201cpannenkoekenhuis\u201d) \u2014 this is a Dutch classic that Amsterdam has largely commercialised but Delft still does authentically.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transit:<\/strong> about 50 minutes direct from Amsterdam Centraal; also easy as a side trip from Rotterdam (20 minutes).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Rotterdam: the one that surprised us most<\/h3>\n<p>Rotterdam was rebuilt after the war and it makes no attempt to look old. The architecture is spectacular, modernist, and occasionally bizarre in the best way: the cube houses by Piet Blom, the Markthal food hall which is also an apartment building, the Erasmus Bridge which is elegant and impractical and iconic. It\u2019s the opposite of Delft and we loved both for different reasons. If you\u2019re traveling with someone who finds canal-belt medieval towns slightly interchangeable, bring them to Rotterdam instead.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t miss:<\/strong> the Markthal (eat and look up at the same time), Cube Houses (you can go inside one), Museum Boijmans van Beuningen depot (the world\u2019s first publicly accessible art storage facility), and the Euromast tower for views.<\/li>\n<li><strong>From Rotterdam:<\/strong> Delft is 20 minutes south; The Hague (Den Haag, home of the International Criminal Court and the Mauritshuis with Vermeer\u2019s \u201cGirl with a Pearl Earring\u201d) is 25 minutes northwest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Utrecht: the one Dutchpeople actually live in<\/h3>\n<p>Utrecht has a canal system that works differently from Amsterdam\u2019s \u2014 the quays sit lower than street level, so bars and restaurants are built into the canal walls themselves. It\u2019s an unusual urban design that creates an oddly intimate atmosphere. Utrecht also has the Netherlands\u2019 most-visited landmark that most international tourists have never heard of: the Dom Tower, which you can climb for views that stretch to Amsterdam on a clear day. The city has a strong student population and a genuine lived-in feel that\u2019s harder to find in Amsterdam these days.<\/p>\n<h3>The Hague (Den Haag): culture and coast<\/h3>\n<p>Two things make The Hague worth a half-day: the Mauritshuis (small museum, extraordinary collection \u2014 Vermeer, Rembrandt, and the Girl with the Pearl Earring in one manageable space) and the easy tram connection to Scheveningen beach on the North Sea.
