ARTICLE + SIDEBAR -->

We drive through Levi every winter — the road between our home in Rovaniemi and the slopes passes right through the village. We have stayed in Levi in January, in March for the ski season peak, and several times in summer when the chairlifts stand silent and the fells glow green under a sun that barely sets. Of those visits, the summer ones have surprised us most.

Levi in summer is quieter, cheaper, and genuinely beautiful in a way that winter photos cannot capture. The tundra turns every shade of green. Reindeer wander through the village. And you can hike to the top of the fell under golden midnight light that never quite turns to dark.

Short answer

Yes, Levi in summer is absolutely worth visiting. The ski resort transforms into a hiking and outdoor destination with midnight sun, reindeer safaris, mountain biking, and some of Finland’s best fell walking. June and July are the peak summer months — expect temperatures of 15–22°C, endless daylight, and far fewer crowds than winter.

In this guide

What Levi in summer actually looks like

Best activities and things to do

Levi summer quick-reference: dates, costs, and logistics

Summer weather: what to expect month by month

Levi vs other Lapland summer destinations

Mistakes we have seen (and made) in summer Levi

FAQ: Levi in summer

A final word from closer to Levi than most

What Levi in summer actually looks like

The resort that never really sleeps

Levi is Finland’s most visited ski resort, which means its reputation is built entirely on white slopes and apres-ski. But the infrastructure that makes it great in winter — the hotels, restaurants, activity operators, and the fell itself — does not vanish when the snow melts. It just changes its offering.

The ski lifts close around April and most reopen for mountain biking and sightseeing in June. By late June, the resort has shifted its programming to hiking festivals, midnight sun guided walks, and reindeer farm visits. A number of restaurants stay open year-round, and several chalets and glass cabins offer summer rates that are significantly lower than peak winter prices.

The midnight sun at Levi

Levi sits above the Arctic Circle — well within the midnight sun zone. From roughly early June to mid-July, the sun does not dip below the horizon at all. That means you can hike to the fell summit at midnight and watch orange light pour across the tundra in every direction. We have done it. It is one of those moments that makes you understand why people become obsessed with Lapland summer.

Midnight sun period: approximately June 6 to July 7 in the Levi area

Best midnight sun hike: Levi fell summit (531 m), accessible via trail or chairlift

Temperature at night: can drop to 5–8°C even in July — bring a warm layer

Best activities and things to do in Levi in summer

Hiking to the Levi fell summit

The most iconic summer activity in Levi is walking to the top of the fell. The main trail from the village centre is roughly 3.5 km with around 300 metres of elevation gain — doable for most reasonably fit people in trainers, though trail shoes are better. At the summit, you get a 360-degree panorama across Lapland: a sea of birch and pine, river valleys threading between the fells, and in June and July, sunlight painting everything gold well past midnight.

The chairlift operates in summer for sightseeing and mountain biking access. There is a cafe and a viewing platform at the summit — basic but perfectly placed.

Mountain biking and downhill trails

Levi’s ski slopes become a serious mountain biking destination in summer. The resort has graded trails running from beginner-friendly gravel routes to technical downhill runs. You can rent bikes at the base of the lift, pay for lift access, and spend a few hours lapping the fell. We have watched people arrive expecting a quiet hiking trip and leave obsessed with the biking — the trails are genuinely good.

Reindeer and wildlife experiences

Summer is actually one of the best seasons for reindeer encounters in Lapland. The herds move to higher fell ground and you will often see them wandering across hiking trails or grazing near the roads. Several reindeer farms near Levi offer guided summer visits — feeding the calves, learning about Sami herding traditions, and in some cases joining a short cart ride on the fell paths. These are less touristy and more personal than the crowded winter reindeer encounters.

Fishing and lake days

The area around Levi has dozens of lakes and rivers. Summer is peak fishing season — perch, pike, and trout are all active. You can pick up a day licence at most activity operators and either fish independently or join a guided trip. Some of the lake cabins in the Levi area have rowing boats and simple saunas right on the water — the Finnish summer experience at its most essential.

→

Also read Pyha, Luosto, Saariselka: Which Lapland Resort for Summer? — we compare all three of Levi’s main rivals in a single guide.

Levi summer quick-reference: dates, costs & Levi is a resort village — smaller, quieter, more focused on outdoor activity. For urban comfort alongside nature, Rovaniemi wins. For fell walking and mountain biking as the main event, Levi wins.

Levi vs Pyha: Pyha is smaller and wilder. The national park setting is spectacular but there are fewer facilities. Levi has significantly more accommodation options, restaurants, and organised activities. Pyha is better for serious hikers who want to self-navigate; Levi is better for families or those wanting guided experiences alongside the trails.

Levi vs Saariselka: Saariselka is the most remote of the three and sits at the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park. It is for people who want a wilderness base with multi-day trekking. Levi is a better family and couple destination with resort infrastructure that Saariselka does not have.

Levi vs Yllas: Yllas is Levi’s closest rival — also a major ski resort, also above the Arctic Circle, also excellent in summer. Yllas has slightly more rugged terrain and draws a more outdoorsy crowd. Levi is better connected and has more resort-style amenities. Both are excellent summer destinations and it largely comes down to personal preference.

→

Related guide Is Summer in Lapland Worth It? Book as soon as you have firm dates.

Underestimating the mosquitoes. We have had visitors laugh off the warning and spend their first evening miserable on a lakeside hike. Mosquito repellent is not optional in July. A head net costs almost nothing and is transformative for trail hiking.

Expecting the same prices as winter. Levi in summer is cheaper than winter, but it is still Lapland. Food and accommodation prices are high by Finnish standards. Budget accordingly and do not assume it will be cheap just because it is off-season.

Missing the midnight sun window. If your main reason for coming is the midnight sun, book before July 7. After that date the sun starts setting again — still beautiful, but the full above-the-horizon midnight sun experience is over.

Skipping the fell summit at night. The best use of the midnight sun is hiking or riding to the fell top between 11 pm and 1 am. People who do not do this consistently say it is their biggest regret from the trip.

Bringing only summer clothes. Nights in Lapland drop below 10 degrees C even in July. Pack a warm layer and a windproof jacket regardless of the forecast. The fell summit is always cooler than the village.

FAQ: Levi in summer

<details>

Is Levi worth visiting in summer?

Yes, genuinely. Levi in summer is a fell hiking and outdoor destination with midnight sun, mountain biking, reindeer encounters, and some of Finland’s most accessible tundra walking. It is quieter and cheaper than winter and most visitors who come in summer say they preferred it to the ski season.

</details><details>

What is there to do in Levi in summer?

The main activities are hiking to the Levi fell summit, mountain biking on the resort’s summer trails, reindeer farm visits, lake fishing, kayaking, and guided midnight sun walks. The chairlift operates in summer for sightseeing and biking access. There are also several spas and saunas in and around the resort village.

</details><details>

When is the best time to visit Levi in summer?

June and July are the peak summer months. June offers the midnight sun and warming temperatures. July is the warmest month overall. August is quieter with golden light and excellent berry picking, and the early aurora season may begin in late August for those who also want a chance of the northern lights.

</details><details>

Is Levi open in summer?

Yes. While the ski slopes close in April, Levi operates year-round as a destination. Hotels, restaurants, and activity operators stay open. The chairlift reopens for summer use approximately mid-June through mid-August for sightseeing and mountain biking.

</details><details>

How do I get to Levi in summer?

The easiest route is to fly into Kittila Airport (KTT), which is 15 minutes from Levi village. Direct summer flights operate from Helsinki, and some international routes run seasonally. Alternatively, fly to Rovaniemi (170 km south) and rent a car — the drive is beautiful and takes approximately two hours through classic Lapland scenery.

</details><details>

Is Levi expensive in summer?

Levi in summer is typically 30 to 50 percent cheaper than peak winter season for accommodation. Activity and lift prices are also lower. That said, Lapland in general is not a budget destination — food and services are more expensive than in southern Finland. Plan for higher costs than a typical European city break.

</details>

A final word from closer to Levi than most

We are in Rovaniemi, which puts us about two hours south of Levi. We do not need a flight or a long journey to visit — and we still choose to go in summer, not just when clients ask us about it but for our own pleasure. That tells you something.

The thing people do not expect about Lapland summer is how alive it feels. Winter is dramatic and beautiful, but it is also harsh and dark for most of the day. Summer is when the land exhales. The birch forests turn gold-green. Reindeer calves follow their mothers along the paths. The sun lights everything from a low angle that photographers spend their whole lives chasing, and it does it all night long.

Levi in summer will not have the slope-side parties and the apres-ski energy.
