Both times the city delivered — but it took us a while to stop treating a short stopover like a failure and start treating it like the whole plan.

If you’re flying through on an Iceland stopover deal, or you have exactly two days before or after the Ring Road, this is the guide we wish we’d had. We’re writing from Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, where “stopover city that turns into a whole trip” is something we understand very personally — that’s basically how we think of Helsinki, and Reykjavik is that, but saltier and more volcanic.

Short answer

Reykjavik in 48 hours is genuinely enough time to walk the old harbour, climb Hallgrímskirkja, soak in a geothermal pool, eat well, and get a feel for what makes Iceland different. Focus on the city centre, add one half-day trip to the Golden Circle or Blue Lagoon, and resist the urge to drive the whole Ring Road in two days.

In this guide

Is 48 hours enough in Reykjavik?

How to structure your two days

The 48-hour Reykjavik checklist

What to eat and where

Day trips worth doing in 48 hours

Mistakes we made (so you don’t)

FAQ

A final word from Rovaniemi

Is 48 hours in Reykjavik really enough?

The honest answer: yes — with the right mindset

Reykjavik is one of the world’s smallest capital cities. The walkable centre is tight enough that you can cross it on foot in 20 minutes. That’s not a criticism — it means 48 hours covers more ground proportionally than two days in London or Paris would. What you’re buying with extra days in Iceland isn’t more of Reykjavik; it’s the rest of the country.

The mistake most people make on a short Reykjavik stopover is trying to bolt on too much Iceland. They book two nights in the city and then spend both days driving to the Blue Lagoon, the Golden Circle, and the South Coast — and never actually spend meaningful time in the city itself. We did something similar on our first visit. By the time we came back and just walked around, sat in cafés, and soaked in a neighbourhood pool, the city made a lot more sense.

What you can realistically see

The old harbour (Reykjavik Harbour and Grandi district) — flat, walkable, and genuinely lovely even if you’re only passing through.

Hallgrímskirkja — the famous church. Climb the tower. You get the whole city and the sea in one view.

Laugavegur street — the main shopping and eating strip. Easy to walk end to end, good for picking up Icelandic wool.

A geothermal pool — not the Blue Lagoon (that’s a day trip). We’re talking about the neighbourhood Laugardalslaug or the newer Sky Lagoon closer to the city.

Tjörnin pond — the little city lake with all the birds. Ten minutes from anything. One of the most calming spots in the city.

One good meal, one coffee, one skyr — non-negotiable.

How to structure your two days in Reykjavik

Day 1: Arrive, walk, eat, soak

Land at Keflavik, take the Flybus or book a transfer, and give yourself the afternoon. Don’t try to drive anywhere on day one. The airport is 50 kilometres from the city and that drive eats time. Drop bags, eat something, walk to Hallgrímskirkja.

Day 1 sequence

Arrive → check in → walk to Hallgrímskirkja (tower: open daily) → walk down to the harbour via Skólavörðustígur street → Grandi district for a late lunch or fish soup at Sægreifinn (the Lobster Hut) → early evening at the Sky Lagoon or Laugardalslaug → dinner on Laugavegur → walk if it’s summer (midnight sun makes this surreal).

Day 2: One half-day trip, then the city again

This is where people go wrong. A “quick” Golden Circle loop is actually four to five hours with driving. A Blue Lagoon visit is three hours minimum including transfer. Pick one, commit fully, and be back in the city by 4 pm. The evening is yours again.

Day 2 sequence

Morning: Golden Circle (book a bus tour if you don’t want to drive, they’re cheap and efficient) OR Blue Lagoon (pre-book, it sells out) → back to the city by 4 pm → Tjörnin pond walk → National Museum of Iceland if you like context → dinner with a reservation somewhere good → late walk in the long light.

→

Related read If you’re extending beyond Reykjavik, our guide to the Iceland Ring Road in 7 days covers what to do once you leave the capital behind.

The Reykjavik 48-hour checklist

These are the things we would do — and did do — in a 48-hour window. Pick up a lopapeysa (Icelandic wool jumper) if you’re after one, and avoid the tourist shops on the main drag for anything you actually want to keep.

Sit by Tjörnin pond — bring a coffee, watch the birds, notice that the city is quieter than it looks from the outside.

Try skyr — the real, plain, thick stuff from any supermarket.
