A demanding 5\u20136 hour return hike, but the summit view \u2014 sea, islands, and golden light in all directions \u2014 is the single best thing we did in Troms\u00f8.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Troms\u00f8 Bridge:<\/strong> free, central, and gives you the classic view of the Arctic Cathedral with the city and mountains behind. Perfect at midnight when the light is warm and the crowds have thinned.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"s2\">Hiking above Troms\u00f8 in summer<\/h2>\n<p>Troms\u00f8 is surrounded by dramatic terrain in a way that most Norwegian cities simply aren\u2019t. You step out of a coffee shop and within twenty minutes you can be on a trail climbing steeply above the fjord. The midnight sun means you can hike at any hour \u2014 and we recommend doing at least one hike between 9\u00a0pm and midnight for the light alone.<\/p>\n<h3>Three hikes worth doing<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fjellet via Fjellheisen:<\/strong> take the cable car up and walk the ridge trail north. Easy, stunning, accessible for most fitness levels. You can walk back down (1.5\u00a0hours) or take the cable car both ways.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tromsdalstinden (1,238\u00a0m):<\/strong> start from the Tromsd\u00f8la valley trailhead. Steep, unmarked in places, and requires decent fitness \u2014 but this is the summit above all summits in the area. Allow 6\u20138 hours return. Carry food, water, and a rain layer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hamn\u00f8y to Str\u00f8mmen ridge loop:<\/strong> on the island of Senja, 2\u00a0hours south of Troms\u00f8 by car. If you have a rental car and an extra day, this is one of the most dramatic coastal hikes in Norway, with next to no crowds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The weather in Troms\u00f8 changes <em>fast<\/em>. We left in sunshine and returned in rain on both our hike days. Go in the evening for the best light. The views of the Troms\u00f8 archipelago are some of the best in Arctic Norway.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Whale-watching from the city harbour:<\/strong> summer whale tours run from late May to August, typically for humpback and minke whales. Most tours are 3\u20134 hours. Book at least a few days ahead in peak July.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Polaria Arctic experience centre:<\/strong> a good half-day option, especially if you\u2019re travelling with children. Bearded seals, Arctic film, and a permanent exhibition on Svalbard.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Troms\u00f8 Museum:<\/strong> the university museum on the southern tip of Troms\u00f8ya island. The Sami cultural collection is one of the better ones in northern Norway.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Island-hopping by ferry:<\/strong> Troms\u00f8 is surrounded by smaller islands connected by free county ferries. Kvaloya island has long beaches and dramatic mountain views. Renting a bike to explore is very doable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Midnight sun kayaking:<\/strong> several operators offer guided kayak tours at midnight in the summer months.
