It means a wedding where the place does the work a guest list usually does: the two of you, perhaps your parents or two best friends, an officiant, a photographer and a setting that needs little beyond candles and a bouquet. Couples come to us from the US, the UK, Australia, Asia and across Europe, and most wanted the same thing: the marriage without the production.

Full disclosure first: Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company. Alla founded it after planning her own wedding in 2024, and we plan weddings from two guests to 200 and more across Lapland, Finland, Sweden and Norway. This is not a neutral survey; it is what we would tell a friend.

For an elopement we scout and prepare the location, handle permits, transport and the weather backup plan, style the ceremony, and can add a fireside toast, a private cabin dinner or a sunrise breakfast. Everything is conducted in English.

Legal or Symbolic: The Two Ways to Elope in Finland

This question decides your timeline, so settle it first.

A legal wedding. Finland allows foreign nationals to marry here, both of you can be foreigners, and there is no residency requirement or waiting period. The one piece of bureaucracy is the examination of impediments to marriage through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency: typically about seven working days once your documents are in, up to several weeks for some international couples, around €60. You need valid passports, a certificate of no impediment from your home country and, if either of you was married before, the divorce decree or death certificate, all officially translated into Finnish, Swedish or English and in some countries apostilled. Start gathering documents at least three to four months before the date. The ceremony is performed by a district court judge or another authorised official, in English if you wish, at virtually any location: a lakeside, a snowy clearing, an igloo, a husky farm. The officiant registers the marriage within days, and the Finnish certificate is internationally recognised.

A symbolic ceremony. Many couples sign the papers at home and hold the ceremony that matters to them in Lapland: no paperwork, no timeline, the same vows.

Our Getting Married in Finland page walks through every document. Tell us your choice at the first email; it changes who we book.

When to Come: Elopement Seasons in Lapland

Winter, November to March, is the most popular elopement season, and its months differ more than people expect:

November to December: the deepest polar night and the most candle-lit atmosphere; snow is usually reliable from November. December is Rovaniemi’s busiest month, so book early and read our Lapland Christmas season guide first. The Ice Chapel opens from 15 December.

January to February: the deepest snow and the coldest days, down to −30 °C, with the blue-pink twilight returning through February.

March: often the sweet spot: reliable snow, longer days, bright sun and the Ice Chapel still standing until 31 March.

Outside winter the choice is wider than most couples realise. The northern lights are possible from late August to April, so September or October gives you autumn colours, milder temperatures and a real chance of the aurora without the deep cold. June and early July bring the midnight sun: a ceremony at 22:00 in soft golden light on a lakeshore or fell top. April still has snow under nearly twenty hours of daylight.

Two rules hold whatever the month: winter ceremonies outdoors are kept to 15–20 minutes with a warm space, blankets and hot drinks beside you, and December to March should be booked eight to twelve months ahead. Six to nine months usually suffices otherwise, and short notice is sometimes possible.

Where to Say Your Vows: The Settings We Use

Lapland gives you a short list of settings that are genuinely different from each other:

Our team setting up white florals and lanterns in the Ice Chapel at the Arctic SnowHotel before a winter wedding we styled. Photo: Rovaniemi Weddings

Setting

Season

What it is like

Good to know

A frozen lake near Rovaniemi

Dec–Mar

Wide white ice, snow-covered pines, candles and lanterns

Only once the ice is safe; fire on the shore afterwards

The Ice Chapel, Arctic SnowHotel

15 Dec–31 Mar

Carved by hand every winter; candlelight through ice walls, reindeer hides on the benches

0 to −5 °C inside, so the ceremony is short; seats 30–50

A forest clearing or candle-lit path

Year-round

Pines, moss or snow underfoot, a hand-built wooden arch

Permissions arranged with landowners; platforms for footing

A glass igloo or glass dome

Igloos 1 Sep–31 Mar; domes year-round

Heated, transparent, the sky above you

Dinner domes at Invisible Forest Lodge seat two to six

A fell summit, rapids or a reindeer farm

Year-round

Riisitunturi’s crown snow, the Korouma canyon, reindeer beside you

Transport and light decide the timing

Your own cabin, villa or suite

Year-round

Vows inside or on the terrace, dinner brought to you

Quietest and warmest

Our styling usually means a hand-built wooden arch with seasonal greenery, a bouquet, styled vow books and pens and a decorated ceremony circle, with birch, moss and pine sourced locally. Finland allows foreign nationals to marry, both partners can be foreigners, and there is no residency requirement or waiting period. You apply for an examination of impediments to marriage through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency, which typically takes about seven working days once your documents are in (several weeks for some international applicants) and costs around €60. A civil ceremony can then be held in English at virtually any location. December is the most atmospheric and the busiest. For the northern lights with milder weather, September and October are underrated; for the midnight sun, June to mid-July.
</details><details>
How far ahead should we book an elopement in Lapland?

Eight to twelve months for December to March, when venues such as the Arctic SnowHotel fill quickly; six to nine months is usually enough for the rest of the year. Shorter timelines are sometimes possible for elopements, so ask even if your date is close. If the wedding is to be legal, start gathering documents at least three to four months before the date.
</details><details>
Can we bring a few family members or friends?

Of course. An elopement for us means the two of you or a handful of close people. The Ice Chapel seats 30 to 50, the dinner domes at Invisible Forest Lodge seat two to six, and Arcticmint Villa suits around 15. Tell us the number at the first email and we plan the setting, the dinner and the accommodation around it.
</details><details>
What happens if the weather is bad on our wedding day?

A backup plan is part of every elopement we plan: an indoor space at the venue, a lavvu tent or canopy at a wilderness site, or a sheltered alternative agreed in advance. In winter there is no rain in Lapland, and falling snow only makes the photos better. Outdoor ceremonies are kept to 15 to 20 minutes with blankets, hot drinks and a warm space beside you whatever the forecast.
</details>

Our Honest Final Word

Plainly: Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, and we would like you to plan your elopement with us. But we would say this to a friend who was never going to hire anyone: Lapland is one of the easiest places in the world to elope well. The paperwork is light, the ceremony can happen almost anywhere in English, and the wedding and the honeymoon are the same trip. What matters is choosing the right month for the light you want, keeping the ceremony short enough to enjoy in the cold, and handing the set-up to someone who has stood on that ice before.

Start with Getting Married in Finland to decide between legal and symbolic. married in Lapland?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "Yes. Finland allows foreign nationals to marry, both partners can be foreigners, and there is no residency requirement or waiting period. You apply for an examination of impediments to marriage through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency, which typically takes about seven working days once your documents are in (several weeks for some international applicants) and costs around €60. A civil ceremony can then be held in English at virtually any location. Our Getting Married in Finland page lists every document."}}, {"@type": "Question", "name": "How much does it cost to elope in Lapland?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "An intimate elopement typically costs from around €5,000 all in, and the smallest can start at a few thousand euros. Elopement styling starts from around €800, a cabin or glass igloo for the day is €500–€1,500, full-day photography €1,500–€4,000, the legal examination of impediments around €60. Shorter timelines are sometimes possible for elopements, so ask even if your date is close. If the wedding is to be legal, start gathering documents at least three to four months before the date."}}, {"@type": "Question", "name": "Can we bring a few family members or friends?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "Of course. An elopement for us means the two of you or a handful of close people. The Ice Chapel seats 30 to 50, the dinner domes at Invisible Forest Lodge seat two to six, and Arcticmint Villa suits around 15. Tell us the number at the first email and we plan the setting, the dinner and the accommodation around it."}}, {"@type": "Question", "name": "What happens if the weather is bad on our wedding day?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "A backup plan is part of every elopement we plan: an indoor space at the venue, a lavvu tent or canopy at a wilderness site, or a sheltered alternative agreed in advance. In winter there is no rain in Lapland, and falling snow only makes the photos better. Outdoor ceremonies are kept to 15 to 20 minutes with blankets, hot drinks and a warm space beside you whatever the forecast."}}]}

Eloping in Lapland: the legal paperwork for foreigners, best seasons, frozen-lake and
